Three Generations of Horticulturalists

The Ryan Family

The Ryan Family first became involved in the horticulture of
Hawkes Bay in 1908 starting with Olly’s Grandfather Thomas Ryan, who’s parents had settled a rehab farm in Elsthorpe. This farmland was shared with his sister when their parents passed.

After sharing the family farm with his sister, Thomas Ryan bought land in Twyford where he planted and harvested peas for Sir James Wattie.
As Thomas progressed through the pea growing era, for two years they were the first mobile pea viners in the world.

Oliver Ryan and his involvement in the horticulture sector in Hawkes Bay has only increased from the foundations that his family laid.
In 2005 Oliver Ryan established Malbec Orchards, with the purchase of
St Georges road which included a pack house.
This purchase led to the expansion of the Ryan Fruit brand
and a total of 15 blocks of orchards, including the Ryan families
founding blocks at Wilson road.
